Mentorship provides a unique professional development opportunity for all involved. Mentors gain fresh insights and enhance leadership skills, while mentees receive tailored career guidance. A mentorship program fosters knowledge sharing, strengthens connections across teams, and promotes a culture of learning and growth.

About

The University of Alberta mentorship program provides guidance in the development of meaningful mentor-mentee relationships. This initiative offers faculties, departments, and teams a clear structure and best practices that they can use to create impactful developmental partnerships in their areas.

Commitment

With the assistance of Organizational Development and Talent Management, the faculty, department or unit takes the lead to identify:

  • Mentors: Experienced professionals with valuable insights to share
  • Mentees: Individuals eager to enhance their skills and grow in their roles

Mentorship champions in the faculty, department or unit also:

  • secure sponsorship of senior leadership
  • socialize the program in their area
  • solicit applications
  • match mentors and mentees (often done by a group of senior leaders)
  • celebrate the successes of participants

The Organizational Development and Talent Management team (HRHSE) supports the program by providing:

  • A structure and best practices to guide the mentorship journey
  • An orientation session to clarify expectations and equip participants with tools for success
  • Progress monitoring and troubleshooting advice to ensure a rewarding experience for both mentors and mentees
  • Evaluation and iterative development to incorporate participant learnings into the program design
