For New Employees Registering an Over-Age Dependent If you are a new employee with a dependent aged 21 to 25, who is a full-time student at a university or similar learning institution, contact the Staff Service Centre to declare your over-age dependent's full-time student status. For Current Employees with Dependents Turning 21 Two months prior to your dependent's 21st birthday, you will receive an automated email with instructions on how to confirm your dependent’s full-time student status at a university or similar learning institution. Your dependent will continue to receive Supplemental Health and Dental coverage until their 25th birthday as long as you complete the annual attestation every summer to confirm their full-time student status. If no confirmation is received, the dependent will be removed from your coverage on their 21st birthday. Proof of enrolment is only required if you are selected during our annual compliance audit. |
Frequently Asked Questions - Over-age Dependents
Find answers below for the Over-Age Dependent Student Declaration Process (dependents aged 21–25). If you have any other questions, contact the Staff Service Centre.
a. Full-time post-secondary student: If your dependent is between the ages of 21 and 25, and is enrolled full-time in university, or a similar post-secondary institution, they are eligible to remain on your coverage. You must complete the annual attestation process to declare your over-age dependent's full-time student status, or they will be automatically removed from your coverage effective the day they turn 21.
b. Disabled dependent: If your dependent is over the age of 21 and has a disability that makes them unable to support themselves, they may be eligible for benefits coverage. Medical documentation and approval from Sun Life is required to maintain coverage. Contact the Staff Service Centre to request SunLife Disabled Child Coverage application form.
Two months prior to your dependent's 21st birthday, you will receive an automated email with instructions on how to confirm your dependent’s full-time student status at a university or similar learning institution. Proof of enrolment is not required unless you are selected as part of our annual compliance audit.
Once the attestation has been completed, your dependent’s benefits will continue under your coverage. If attestation of full-time student status enrolment is not completed by the dependents’ 21st birthday, the dependent will be removed from your coverage effective the date of their 21st birthday.
Your over-age dependent will continue to have benefits coverage as long as you annually attest to their full-time student status. You will receive an automated email every July, with instructions on how to attest that your dependent’s full-time student status is still active. Coverage will cease should the student status expire or your over-age dependent reaches the age of 25; whichever occurs first.
The document(s) must be obtained from the educational institution and cannot be handwritten. We will accept a copy of a transcript, verification document, or any other document that includes the below information:
- Dependent's first and last name
- The name of the post-secondary institution
- Dependent's full-time status as deemed by the institution
- The terms that they are currently enrolled in (e.g., Fall and/or Winter Term)
Notify the Staff Service Centre of any changes to the student status of your dependent. Failure to provide confirmation of changes of student status may result in loss of coverage and out of pocket health and dental expenses.
No. Two months prior to your dependent’s 21st birthday, you will receive an automated system email with instructions on how to confirm their full-time student status.
