HRHSE named Canadian HR Reporter 2023 Innovative HR Team

Human Resources, Health, Safety and Environment (HRHSE) has been recognized as an Innovative HR Team for 2023 by Canadian HR Reporter, for their outstanding work on A Culture of Care: University of Alberta’s Safety Action Plan. Canadian HR Reporter annually showcases agile, bold and forward-thinking HR teams across the country.
Congratulations to all who contributed to this work, including the members of the Safety Strategy Advisory Committee and Working Group. These groups included membership from across the university's many faculties, units and student groups, and their ideas and diverse contributions helped establish safety as a core organizational value within the institution. A Culture of Care, which officially launched in December 2022, aims to ensure everyone owns their safety performance and that of others. This award is reflective of the team’s dedication, forward-thinking and skill in this critical work.
The plan highlights:
- The university’s commitment to all aspects of safety including physical, psychological, and cultural
42 measurable initiatives to be implemented over three years that will drive health and safety behaviours, practices, and accountability - Initiatives in the four areas of buy-in and organizational alignment, employee empowerment, recognition and rewards and reporting systems
- Health and safety leadership as year one priorities. The first initiative, launched on April 28, 2023 was the Culture of Care Leadership Commitment
HRHSE continues to drive the success of the action plan and embed safety as a core value of campus culture and achieve a safety culture where everyone owns their safety and that of others.
