5.23 Hosting Academic Visitors
Departments that wish to invite an unsalaried academic visitor to campus should contact the University of Alberta's Academic Visitors Office.
Departments that wish to invite an academic visitor who will receive any payment from the University of Alberta should contact Employment Services-Human Resources.
Academic Visitors and Courses for Credit
From time to time the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) receives enquiries from departments hosting academic visitors who wish to take graduate-level courses for credit during their stay here.
In order to take courses for credit and receive a University of Alberta transcript, the academic visitor must be admitted to the University of Alberta with a student classification.
Depending on the course sought, academic visitors must apply and register either as:
- a Special Graduate student through the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (subject to course availability), or
- an Open Studies student with the Office of the Registrar and Student Awards (subject to course availability)
All related application, admission, registration, and fee requirements/deadlines apply. If official credit is sought, the usual fees will be assessed.
With permission from the course instructor, department Chair, and Dean of the faculty offering the course, an academic visitor can apply to attend courses as an auditor. Contact the Office of the Registrar and Student Awards and refer to the University Calendar for more information.
