Non-Degree Applications
The Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) at the University of Alberta offers opportunities for students to take graduate-level courses for credit without proceeding toward a graduate degree. Students need to be approved for a course in this format and if approved, will apply as special students.
Special graduate students must apply to the department offering the course(s) through the GSMS application system. Admission is valid for a maximum of one year from your start date. A new application is required for anything beyond one year.
Requirements
- Academic documents
- English Language Proficiency scores (if applicable)
For more information, see the Graduate Program Manual Section 5.12 Categories of Graduate Students for definitions. You can also refer to Section 6.6 Special + Visiting Students for information regarding re-application after one year of completed studies.
Note: Not all departments offer special student programs.
