Certificate Pathway
A Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (GCES) or Graduate Certificate in School Leadership (GCSL) from the University of Alberta provides students with up to 12 credits in advanced standing in the MES program. The different options are outlined below:

MES General Ladder
The MES General Ladder is for students who have completed one of the following graduate certificates from the University of Alberta:

- Contemporary Literacy Education: K-9
- Early Childhood Education
- Elementary Music Teaching and Learning
- Indigenous Education
- Indigenous Language Sustainability
- Mathematics Education
- Mentoring and Leadership
- Science Education
- Structured Literacy and Reading Science
- Teaching Students with Complex Communication Needs
- Teaching Students with Significant Disabilities
- Technology in Education
- Trauma-Sensitive Practice
Graduate Certificate in School Leadership

MES STEM Ladder
The MES STEM Ladder is for students who have completed one of the following Graduate Certificates in Educational Studies from the University of Alberta:
- Mathematics Education
- Science Education
- Technology in Education
MES Structured Literacy and Reading Science Ladder
This Ladder is for students who have completed a Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies in Structured Literacy and Reading Science from the University of Alberta.
