Foundational Preceptor Skills Online Training Modules

Four preceptor training modules have been developed by the University of Alberta's Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Launching in Fall 2021, the modules are intended to support both new and experienced preceptors with developing their foundational teaching skills, and learn about best practices for working with a student. We strongly recommend new preceptors complete all four modules prior to precepting their first student.

Each module will take approximately 30-40 minutes to complete. Please note, these modules work best when played using Chrome or Firefox browsers; we also recommend users have the most up-to-date version.

Module 1: Developing Effective Teaching Strategies At Your Practice Site

Module 2: Integrating Learners Into Your Daily Practice

Module 3: Feedback

Module 4: Student Performance Assessment

Precepting the Patient Care Process eModule

While the patient care process has been taught by professors, lecturers, and preceptors for years, a unified set of documents was created in order to standardize the process throughout the undergraduate curriculum. The Patient Care Process document (updated October 2018) provides an overview of the potential information a pharmacist gathers and considers to complete a patient assessment and develop a care plan, and it is recommended that you download and review a copy prior to listening to the podcasts. You can take notes on the Preceptor Practice Assessment Worksheet, to capture details of your patient care practice to share with your student.

Our intent in providing this module is to create an awareness of the process and enable students and preceptors to utilize these documents/tools to faciliate learning and teaching during clinical placements.

This module has five short presentation podcasts (total of approx. 60 mins) with accompanying slides (as handouts) about how to precept the various aspects of the Patient Care Process. The Conclusion session is a slide handout only.  Once you have completed the Patient Care Process Preceptor Module, please record this as completed in your CORE ELMS account under Requirements. We also encourage you to submit this as professional development in your ACP Continuing Competence portfolio.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Training for Preceptors
This interactive preceptor training module, entitled Anti-Oppressive Practices, will increase preceptor and student knowledge of anti-oppressive practices. The module will describe how privilege, biases, power and intersectionality impact health and access to health care.  It will also discuss a case where a microaggression towards a learner occurs and offers an approach that respects differences, and creates an inclusive and safe learning environment for all.
