Dean Christine Hughes
Dr. Christine Hughes is Dean and Professor of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Alberta, ranked among the top three pharmacy institutions in Canada and top 15 for research worldwide.
Christine earned her BSc Pharmacy (1994) from the University of Alberta, a Hospital Residency Diploma (1995) from the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton and a PharmD (1997) at the University of British Columbia. She joined the Faculty in 1997 and has taught in the areas of viral infections and vaccines as well as trained graduate students, pharmacy residents and post-professional PharmD students. During her time with the Faculty, she has held a number of administrative positions, including Pharmacy Practice Division Chair, Assistant Dean (PharmD Curriculum Development), Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs (Acting) and Vice Dean.
For over 20 years, Christine has practiced in the area of HIV. Her interest areas include safety and effectiveness of antiretroviral drug regimens, pharmacokinetic interactions, antiretroviral drug resistance, and prevention of HIV transmission. She is also interested in research evaluating expanded community pharmacists’ roles, including HIV and HCV screening. Since 1998, Christine has been a working group member of the Canadian HIV and Viral Hepatitis Pharmacists (CHAP) Network, and is an editor of the HIV/HCV Drug Therapy Guide drug interaction app. Currently, she works as a clinical pharmacist, HIV, with the Northern Alberta Program.
Christine has published more than 70 peer-reviewed publications, several book chapters and participated in a number of professional development programs and educational events for pharmacists and other HIV care providers. She has received a number of awards and recognitions for her practice and teaching, including the Rutherford Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Education, M.J. Huston Pharmacist of Distinction, and Canadian Pharmacists Association Patient Care Achievement Award in Specialty Practice.
Under Christine’s leadership, the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is focused on supporting and advancing excellence in research and educational programs, and working with stakeholders to support innovations in pharmacy practice. Christine is committed to acting on equity, diversity and inclusion in all the Faculty does.
