Pharmacist Awareness Month (PAM) is an annual event across Canada with pharmacy students and pharmacists taking time to promote the profession. The Alberta Pharmacy Students Association (APSA) and the Canadian Association of Pharmacy Students and Interns (CAPSI) have planned several events to promote the profession. APSA students kicked off PAM with the year-end formal, better known as the Blue and Gold Ball and a faculty pancake breakfast.
Here's a detailed look at the schedule for PAM 2016.
March 4 - Inter-professional Speaker Panel with Lunch sponsored by Pfizer
Venue: ECHA 2-490 Time: 12 - 1 p.m.
HSSA in conjunction with APSA will be providing a seminar on the role of the pharmacist within an interdisciplinary healthcare team. A cardiology team from the U of A hospital including Dr. Sheri Koshman - a pharmacist, Dr. Michelle Graham- a Cardiologist, Lindsey Wallace - a Registered Nurse, and Elizabeth Woo- a Dietitian, will be explaining how Interdisciplinary healthcare functions in real practice.
March 9 - SAF-Pharm: Student advocacy
Venue: TBD Time: 12 - 1 p.m.
Join us for a presentation by professor Jody Shkrobot about student advocacy and the big and small ways to get involved. Professor Shkrobot will explore the controversial issue of corporate pressure to do more medical reviews in less time to meet the quotas.
March 10 - Osteoporosis Clinic
Venue: West Edmonton Mall (near Chapters) Time: 1 - 4 p.m.
A student-run osteoporosis clinic is aimed towards raising awareness regarding bone health. Pharmacy students will be measuring bone density of the patrons at West Edmonton Mall, talking about osteoporosis as well as what one can do to ensure that the health of their bones remains optimal.
March 15 - ATB Financial: From Student to Pharmacist-Financial Investments
Venue: ECHA 2-490 Time: 12 - 1 p.m.
This talk will focus on finances after pharmacy school. Although the talk is targeted more towards 3rd and 4th years, students from all years are encouraged to attend.
March 16 - Hot Chocolate Giveaway and the Role of the Pharmacist
Venue: CAB Northeast Foyer, University of Alberta Time: 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.
APSA members will be handing out hot chocolate in CAB while providing information to students about the pharmacy program and promoting the profession by providing facts on the role of the pharmacist.
March 19 - Pharmacy Mixer
Venue: Room At The Top (RATT) Time: 8 p.m.
With the Pharmacy profession going through a great deal of change. Collaboration amongst our fellow Pharmacists and Pharmacy Students is crucial. Speed mentoring between Pharmacists and Pharmacy Students will go from 8:30 - 9:30 p.m. Following that, it will be time for socializing and dancing.
March 20 - Alumni Hockey Game and Family Skate
Venue: Confederation Arena Time: 5 - 8 p.m.

March 21 - Unique Practices: Forensic Pharmacy and Toxicology
Venue: ECHA 2-490 Time: 12 - 1 p.m.
Ever wonder what jobs you could do outside of the traditional pharmacy practice? APSA is pleased to present Forensic pharmacist and alumnus, Wayne Jeffery, to speak about working as a toxicologist pharmacist in a crime based/forensic setting.
March 22 - Blood Pressure Clinic
Venue: Alberta Legislature Time: 12 - 4 p.m.
A student-run blood pressure clinic to educate the public about their blood pressure and the risks of cardiovascular disease.
March 24 - Unique Practices as presented by RxA: Volunteering in Laos Pharmacy
Venue: ECHA 2-190 Time: 12 - 1 p.m.
In this presentation Margaret Wing, CEO of RxA, will talk about her volunteering experience helping to organize the pharmacy in Laos Friends Hospital for Children, the first full-service pediatric hospital in Northern Laos.
March 26 - Ronald McDonald House Lunch
Venue: Ronald McDonald House Time: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Pharmacy students will be volunteering their time to cook lunch for and interact with the families.
