Updates coming to Gmail
In 2020, Google announced a new integrated workspace that brings all the communication streams closer together. Starting this February, Google will be updating this workspace, making it easier to switch between your inbox, important conversations, and meetings. UAlberta Google accounts will begin seeing messaging to opt-in according to the following timeline:
February 8, 2022 (over 15 days and may not be immediately available for all accounts)
- To use the new view, you must turn on Chat in Gmail and set Chat to the left hand panel.
- An opt-in message will appear to try the new navigation experience.
- The option to revert back will be available in the Gmail settings.
April 2022
- Anyone not opted-in will automatically be migrated to the new experience but can revert back.
End of Q2 2022
- The new experience is now the default for everyone, with no option to revert back.
- Around the same time, the new streamlined navigation experience will appear for Google Chat.
- Note: this also means the option to configure Chat to display on the right side of Gmail will no longer be available.
What is being updated?
When enabled, the new navigation menu will help you stay on top of what’s important and get work done faster in a single, focused location.
Notification bubbles will help to stay on top of what immediately needs your attention. In Chat and Spaces, you can view a full list of conversations and Spaces within a single screen, making it easier to navigate to and engage.
In the months ahead, you will also see email and chat results when using the search bar, finding what you need faster by eliminating the need to search within a specific application.
