Canvas Learning Opportunity Workshops

In partnership with the University of Alberta’s Office of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) and the eClass Support Team, CTL is facilitating several Canvas Learning Opportunities. These workshops are designed to enhance your knowledge and skills with our new LMS.


Canvas Emergency Kit

Pressed for time and need to get your course up and running in Canvas—fast? This hands-on, 3-hour workshop is designed for instructors making the switch to the University of Alberta’s new learning management system. We’ll guide you through the essentials to get you started: navigating Canvas, reviewing your migrated content, customizing your homepage, adding course materials, setting up assignments and quizzes, using SpeedGrader, and finding just-in-time help for when you’re ready to take it to the next level. After each main section, you will be given time to ask questions and complete a practical task to enhance learning. Throughout the workshop, you will actively build your Canvas course content, ensuring you leave with a tangible outcome and the confidence to keep going.

Perfect for anyone needing a quick, practical, no-frills jumpstart to get the first week of their course ready for the Fall.

Canvas Workshop Series

The below Canvas Learning Opportunities are designed with your schedule in mind. Throughout these workshops, you will actively build your Canvas course content, ensuring you leave with a tangible outcome.

By the end of this workshop series, you will be able to:

  • Navigate your Canvas sandbox and migrated course content
  • Identify Canvas features that support your evidence-based teaching strategies
  • Use the University of Alberta Canvas template to build your upcoming course(s) and
  • Access just-in-time support

Workshop #1: Creating Your Course Using Your Migrated Content and the U of A Canvas Template

 Aug. 18

This workshop, the first of three, covers essential information about the K16 migration and a tour of the Canvas dashboard. You'll discover strategies for organizing content moved from eClass to Canvas. Learn how easy it is to create multimodal course content using your migrated courses and the University of Alberta Canvas template. We'll show you how to seamlessly coordinate student learning with Canvas Modules. You'll practice using Canvas tools like the Rich Content Editor, Pages, Announcements, Discussions, and Studio. Finally, you'll find out where to locate just-in-time resources for additional support.

Workshop #2: Building and Grading Assessments for your Course in Canvas

In this workshop, the second of three, we will explore strategies to create assignments and quizzes using the University of Alberta Canvas template. Then, we’ll practice building and grading your course assessments more efficiently with the following Canvas tools: Assignments, Quizzes, Rubrics, and SpeedGrader. Finally, our eClass Support Team will help you navigate your new Canvas Gradebook.

Workshop #3: Canvas Features to Maximize Student Engagement

In the previous two workshops, you learned how to build content and assessments in Canvas and organize and coordinate your course's student experience. In this third workshop, you will learn how to maximize student engagement and establish a learning community by leveraging innovative Canvas tools such as Discussions, Groups, Collaborations, Pages with shared editing, Peer Review, Video annotations and quizzes, Analytics, and more.

Trousse d’urgence Canvas

Vous n’avez pas beaucoup de temps et vous devez préparer votre cours dans Canvas? Cet atelier pratique de 3 heures est conçu pour vous aider à passer en vitesse au nouveau système de gestion de l’apprentissage de l’Université de l’Alberta. Nous y couvrirons l’essentiel : navigation dans Canvas et paramètres, révision de votre contenu migré, personnalisation de la page d’accueil, ajout de ressources, création de travaux et d’examens, utilisation de Speedgrader et ressources sur demande pour vous soutenir dans vos futures explorations d’autres outils et fonctionnalités.

Apprêtez votre ordinateur (et votre câble d’alimentation) et préparez-vous à mettre vos apprentissages en pratique. Tout au long de l’atelier, vous créerez activement votre cours dans Canvas afin de repartir avec un résultat concret et une meilleure maîtrise de la plateforme. Cet atelier est idéal si vous voulez un coup de pouce rapide afin de publier un cours fonctionnel rapidement.
