City Building
The phrase ‘City Building’ has come into common usage in recent years. The term implies that the ‘building’ is positive, that things get better as the building takes place and cities and communities grow. The real estate sector plays an indispensable role in the business of ‘city and community building’ creating much of the built form. And there are multiple other players across disciplines playing significant roles. For each player the process of city and community building may mean something totally different but for most the vision is the same - to create more vibrant, healthy, sustainable, livable, inclusive cities and communities each with a strong economic base. We need to further encourage and facilitate collaboration within and among academia, business, government, and NGOs around this goal. This will ensure our cities and communities can gain from social and technological innovation, big data and connectivity while at the same time preserving transparency, privacy and accountability.
At the University of Alberta, there are numerous entities that focus on some component of city and community building.
