BUEC 648: China Study Tour

Course Overview:

Learning and being able to witness a country's business environment is integral to the learning and career development of our MBA students. The Masters Programs Office offers students the unique opportunity to participate in an international study tour to China during the spring. This 3 credit course combines lectures and assignments at the University of Alberta during the Winter Term with a 12-day on-site study tour of Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai in May. On-site, students participate in company visits and lectures as well as some cultural and sightseeing activities. The tour component is designed to allow students to gain first-hand experience and understanding of the unique business culture and context of China.

Course Information:

This 3 credit course is comprised of 2 components; classroom component and on-site tour component. The course combines lectures, company visits and other cultural or historic site visits in China

Classroom Component:

The classroom component will focus on understanding the political and economic model, as well as the business culture and practices of China and, will take place during the Winter 2020 semester. In addition to lectures with the course instructor, there will be one or two preparatory sessions with the program coordinators for orientation. All sessions will take place in a School of Business room TBA.

On-site Tour Component:

The 12-day on-site tour of Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai will be during the first two weeks of May. During the tour, students will participate in numerous company visits, lectures, and sightseeing activities.

  • Shanghai GM
  • Hanergy

Previous sightseeing activities include:

  • The Great Wall
  • Terra Cotta Warriors Museum
  • Tianamen Square
  • The Forbidden City

Accommodation:

All accommodations during the tour are arranged by the Alberta School of Business. Students that wish to extend their stay in China will be responsible for finding their own housing arrangements.
