For many stargazers, the name Douglas Hube is synonymous with astronomy. The professor emeritus in the U of A Department of Physics has left a legacy of research, education and outreach activities that has inspired generations.

Recognizing his outstanding contributions to the field, the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, Edmonton Centre branch established the RASC Edmonton Centre - Douglas P Hube Award.

"Many RASC members, as well as U of A students, have been inspired to learn more about astronomy because of Dr. Hube's mentorship. It was only fitting to name an award that encourages study in Astronomy after him," explains Krista Stefan, President of RASC Edmonton Centre.

The award is given to a resident of Alberta with satisfactory academic standing entering the second, third or fourth year of study for a BSc with Specialization in Astrophysics.

For Hube, having a scholarship bear his name was an unexpected and exceptional honour.

'I am particularly pleased that the criteria for the award includes "leadership and community involvement",' he says. "During the past thirty years, the campus observatory program has provided many students with an opportunity to share their knowledge of astronomy with other students and with members of the public. The RASC award gives formal and well-deserved recognition to students who volunteer their time to use their university education for the betterment of society."
