Admission and Program Changes

Admission to the Faculty of Science

Admission to Science is competitive and students must meet all requirements as indicated in the academic calendar and on the university admission pages.  This includes students who are currently enrolled in a Faculty of Science degree and want to transfer to a different  Science degree.

A few things to note:

  1. All admission decisions are final and cannot be appealed
  2. Requirements and deadlines are posted on the UofA admission pages. Please review to ensure you have all documents ready.  The “How to apply” page provides links to domestic and international admission requirements along with access to program description pages.
  3. Current Science students who want to change their degree program will need to apply  for admission or internal transfer through uab.ca/apply This includes changes from Major to Honors or to BSc/BEd. If in doubt, contact Science Student Services.  See below for other program changes.
  4. Transfer credit for undergraduate admission is assessed after an admission offer has been made, and you have accepted that offer. In order to assess your courses please send all required documents including a course syllabus.
  5. Students who apply to transfer to Science, and are in poor academic standing in their current or previous faculty or institution will not be admitted.

Admission after Fresh Start

A minimum of 24 units of course weight with a competitive AGPA must be successfully completed in the Fresh Start program to be considered for readmission to the Faculty of Science. The Faculty may also specify course requirements to be fulfilled. Students who successfully complete the Fresh Start program may apply for readmission as transfer students.  See the academic standing section of the calendar for details.

Students who fail the Fresh Start program will not be admissible to Science.

Modifying your Science degree (for currently attending UofA Faculty of Science students)

It is common for students to change their mind about their chosen subject area. If you are a current Science student you may request to make internal changes to your program, at no cost.

Remember, it is your responsibility to ensure you meet all requirements for the subject area you are requesting. Some degrees have quotas and very competitive averages. Successful transfer is not guaranteed.

Wait… before we go further!

It can be hard to understand what counts as an internal program change and what requires an official application through the university admission process.

Do you want to… Action required:
Transfer from the BSc Major degree to BSc Honors degree? Apply at ualberta.ca by March 1
Transfer from the BSc Honors degree to BSc Major degree? Apply at ualberta.ca by March 1
Transfer into or out of the BSc/BEd combined degree? Apply at ualberta.ca by March 1
Transfer from one of the discontinued degrees (General, Specialization, or Honors) to one of the new degrees? Apply at ualberta.ca by March 1
Transfer into one of the discontinued degrees? For example, transfer from BSc General to BSc Specialization. This is no longer possible. Students cannot transfer between the discontinued degrees.

Note: If you have completed 3 years or more in a General, Specialization, or Honors degree and you are returning from a leave, you may petition to return to that same previous degree. Contact our office for support.

Note: Petitions are not guaranteed, and decisions cannot be appealed.
Change your major and/or minor in the BSc General degree? Students currently enrolled in the BSc General degree are still able to change their major and/or minor. See the timelines for details on how often we process these changes.
