A message from the director

Welcome to the Teacher Support site! On behalf of the MD Program, I want to thank you for your interest, efforts and time in teaching our medical students. You are valued and appreciated! 

There are many ways for you to become involved in teaching in the MD Program — whether new to this community or a returning, seasoned teacher, this site can assist you in navigating opportunities and resources. There are curated resources to facilitate your access to faculty development opportunities, particularly tailored to teaching in the MD Program. 

I encourage you to access the resources on this page as a way to build community,  to share experiences, and to ask and answer questions. I also hope the resources available to you and the community surrounding you  helps foster and/or expand your identity as a teacher and continues to build a strong culture of support.

  • Get support  for multi-source feedback, including peer consultation (as requested). 
  • Access facilitated coaching as part of the CPSA’s Physician Practice Improvement Program.
  • Review materials and resources specifically tailored to support your success as a teacher.
  • Receive advice related to interpreting feedback and evaluations about your teaching.
  • Find out about important policies and curricular updates.
  • Provide suggestions and feedback to the MD Program directly to optimize your  teaching experience and that of others.

Resources

  • The MD Program Teachers’ Hub: Have you ever asked yourself "What makes an effective slide deck?" or "How do I thoughtfully incorporate questions into my lectures?" Or "What's the difference between sex and gender or between race and ethnicity?" and "why does it matter when teaching?"
    • The Teachers' Hub is a useful site for practical answers to these questions and many more. Co-created between medical students and instructors in the MD Program at the University of Alberta, this hub offers resources that address specific points of feedback that have been raised by students and instructors.
  • FOMD Faculty and Staff Resources: Find faculty members, technology and development support, and resources to support your well-being.
  • FoMD Faculty Development Events Listing: Search for events, workshops and more.
  • Centre for Teaching & Learning (CTL): Supports the university’s teaching mission and holds primary responsibility for professional development of teaching practice at the U of A.
  • University of Alberta Library Resources: Explore journals such as The Teaching Professor or Medical Education.
  • CPSA Physician Practice Improvement Plan: Make a plan to hone your skills, and consider opportunities where you can grow in your teaching career.
