FOMD Alumni-Student Resource Network

Did you know there are over 16,000 FoMD alumni living around the world, with various backgrounds, skills and interests?

There are many ways alumni can add value to student activities, including but not limited to:

  • Speaking at an event / sharing stories
  • Sharing career advice and insights
  • Participating in mentorship activities
  • Contributing ideas and advice to the executive board as an alumni representative
  • Connections with industry and organizations
  • Social and networking opportunities

FoMD student groups / clubs can request support through the FoMD Alumni-Student Resource Network, an initiative of the FoMD Alumni Advisory Council (AAC) for activities that connect students and alumni. Here are the supports the AAC can provide:

  • Help student groups find suitable alumni volunteers/attendees for their activities
  • Provide small grants (up to $500) to support activities that connect alumni and students
  • Track alumni volunteerism and recognize FoMD alumni who to give their time to student activities (e.g. we will send a thank you note to ensure alumni feel appreciated and want to continue to give their time)

Priority for support will be given to activities that:

  • demonstrate benefits to FoMD students
  • have a clearly defined role for alumni participants
  • involve alumni in ways that utilize their unique skills and expertise
  • provide meaningful opportunities for alumni and students to interact

FoMD student group request for support

Complete the Request Support form for your student group’s upcoming activities that connect alumni and students.
Requests should be submitted between August 15 and March 15, as all funding will be allocated by March 31 for the academic year. Providing as much lead time as possible allows for thorough review and response. Early submission increases the likelihood of receiving support. Even if the activity is in the early planning stages, submitting the form early enables involvement from the start, ensuring the best possible assistance in connecting the right alumni and resources.

Alberta Medical Students' Conference & Retreat

Medical students from the U of A and U of C gather annually in Canmore for a conference on developing their mental and physical wellbeing. The conference engages alumni as keynote speakers. The FoMD Alumni-Student Resource Network, in collaboration with the Dental Alumni Association, arranged lunch and assisted in identifying alumni speakers.

IceBowl

IceBowl, an annual hockey tournament, brings together medical students from across Western Canada. Through friendly competition, IceBowl fosters camaraderie and provides a unique opportunity for students to connect with peers from Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia. The FoMD Alumni-Student Resource Network recruited alumni to participate in a special alumni game and supported an alumni-student mixer following the game.

Inclusive Health Conference

The conference serves as a safe space for like-minded health professionals who share a vision for improved LGBTQ+ healthcare. Participants engage in meaningful conversations, exchange insights, and build connections that contribute to a future of inclusive and compassionate healthcare. The FoMD Alumni-Student Resource Network supported the conference organized by the Sexuality & Gender Advocacy Committee (SGA) by promoting it to alumni and offering financial support.

Kind Mail Project

ASSOCIATE ALUMNI REGISTRATION (for former residents)

In 2012, the University of Alberta's Board of Governors and President's Executive Committee confirmed the decision to recognize learners who completed their residency at the University of Alberta as 'Associate Alumni.'

'Associate Alumni' status provides access to all of the opportunities and benefits offered by the Alumni Association.

The University must obtain consent from residents to create an ‘Associate Alumni’ record in their name. Find out if you need to provide consent; read on for more information.

Residents with other degrees from the U of A

Residents who also have another degree from the U of A (e.g. MD, MSc, BSc, etc.), are automatically given ‘Alumni’ status. No further action is required to have an alumni record made in your name. Update your contact information and stay connected.

Residents who started their program in 2013 and onwards

Residents who started their residency program in 2013 and onwards provided consent through a consent form collected by The Office of Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) at the start of their residency program. Using this consent form, the University will create an ‘Associate Alumni’ record upon completion of the residency program. No further action is required to have an ‘Associate Alumni’ record made in your name. Update your contact information and stay connected.

Residents who started their program before 2013

Residents who started their residency prior to 2013 must provide consent to the University to create an ‘Associate Alumni’ record in their name. Please complete this registration form to provide us with your current contact information and consent.
