Grow Wisely
PHASE 1
- The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD) Equity Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) office created the Grow Wisely guide for equitable hiring. Being the first at the University of Alberta, this FoMD guide became a model for other units on campus to improve their hiring practices and was shared with other faculties of medicine in Canada.

PHASE 2
- The Faculty implemented Implicit Association Tests (IAT) for Search and Selection Committee members for Chairs positions to identify potential biases before making hiring decisions. This test is based on a project developed by Harvard University to identify disparities between the conscious and unconscious thinking people have.
- The FoMD's EDI Office advocates for the acknowledgment of career interruptions on evaluation forms of candidates that are applying for Chair positions.
- The Grow Wisely guide and the pilot volunteer census questionnaire are being shared with other faculties of medicine in Canada-the pilot questionnaire has been shared internationally as well-to encourage more inclusive and equitable practices for hiring.
