Macc Student Ambassador

Lynette Tedoldi, Master of Accounting Student Ambassador and Senior Financial Analyst at the Canada Energy Regulator recently completed Year 1 of the MAcc program. Lynette shares briefly about herself, why she chose the MAcc over CPA PEP, how MAcc has impacted her career, and advice for anyone interested in entering the program.

Tell us about yourself!

Two decades ago, I made the journey from Uganda in East Africa to Canada. My time in Canada has been marked by a diverse array of experiences. I've tackled the challenges of mastering both French and English, languages different from my mother tongue. I've also acclimated to the geographical variations of Canada, relishing the distinct four seasons in provinces like Ontario, Quebec, and Alberta. Furthermore, I've wholeheartedly embraced the diverse cultures present in Canadian classrooms through interactions with my peers.

I've come to recognize that maintaining a steadfast commitment to my academic aspirations is crucial for unraveling the intricacies of my multi-faceted Canadian life. This commitment has also paved the way for me to uncover numerous opportunities to have a more profound impact on those around me.

Why did you choose the MAcc program as opposed to the CPA PEP or another accredited university program?

• My MAcc studies provided a dynamic hybrid learning environment where collaboration with faculty and classmates bridged the gap between classroom theory and practical application.
• The program allows me to enrich my education by completing the comprehensive suite of accounting electives—Finance, Audit & Assurance, Taxation, and Performance Management—equipping me with the vital skills sought after by employers. There is also the opportunity to work on soft skills in courses like Bargaining and Negotiation.
• Engaging with our extensive alumni network and dedicated MAcc program staff, I've expanded my professional connections across various sectors including private, industry and public service.

How has the MAcc helped you in your accounting career thus far, and what skills from the MAcc program are useful at work or in your everyday life?

• Professional Expertise: I've honed my expertise in technical accounting and business case analysis, gaining insights into the diverse challenges organizations encounter and developing strategies to address them effectively.
• Interpersonal Abilities: My proficiency in time management and cultivating robust networks is a cornerstone of my personal approach, enabling me to forge meaningful connections with a wide array of professionals and contribute to a collaborative and inclusive community through leadership.
• Balanced Growth: I've successfully balanced my academic and professional commitments, ensuring room for personal growth and quality moments with loved ones, by prioritizing and streamlining my learning journey.

How would you describe your overall experience in the MAcc program?

• Transformation and Time Management: Experienced a life-changing journey, learning the value of time and self-discipline to balance academic rigor with personal development.
• Mentorship and Diverse Perspectives: Benefited from a rich tapestry of insights from mentors and peers, fostering a proactive and adaptable mindset, and an ethic of seizing the day.

As we all know MAcc is a very intensive program, how did you maintain your mental health during those 4 months?

• Embracing Balance: Actively integrating enjoyable and soothing pursuits into my study routine to ensure mental well-being and sustained productivity.
• Harnessing Strengths: Continually acknowledging my abilities and using them as a foundation for overcoming challenges and learning from missteps.
• Wisdom through Collaboration: Consistently seeking advice and diverse perspectives from mentors and colleagues when navigating new challenges or refining my approaches to complex problems.
• Community Engagement: Actively participating in community and extracurricular activities to broaden my horizons, develop empathy, and contribute to collective growth.

Do you have any advice for anyone thinking about pursuing the MAcc program?

• Research Thoroughly: Before you commit to the MAcc program, make sure you understand what the curriculum entails and how it aligns with your career goals. Look into the specific courses, the faculty's expertise, and the program's accreditation. There are excellent resources to support this process through the Alberta School of Business.
• Network with Alumni: Reach out to current or graduate students of the program to gain insights into their experiences and how the degree has impacted their careers. Their firsthand perspectives can be invaluable in making an informed decision.
• Prepare Financially: Understand the financial commitment required for the program. Explore scholarships, financial aid, and/or employer-related opportunities that may be available to support your studies.
• Develop a Strong Work Ethic: The MAcc program can be rigorous. Be prepared to dedicate considerable time to studying and engaging with the material in a team-based setting to fully benefit from the education offered.
• Focus on Soft Skills: In addition to technical knowledge, pay attention to developing soft skills such as communication, leadership, and teamwork, which are crucial for both this graduate experience and a successful career in accounting.
