Policy
Information about awards, scholarships and bursaries open to students in the School of Business is available on the Registrar's Office website. It is the responsibility of students to be aware of this information and to apply through the central scholarship application before applicable deadline.
For awards where nomination is made by the School of Business, the following rules must be followed:
- Students must submit an application form through the central scholarship application before the applicable deadline.
- Students must normally have achieved a GPA of 3.5 or greater in the preceding Fall/Winter.
- Students must complete a full normal course load of 30 units of course weight in the preceding Fall/Winter to be eligible for awards for which academic achievement is the sole criterion.
- Where an award is based on criteria in addition to or other than academic achievement, preference shall be given to students who have completed a full normal course load of 30 units of course weight in the preceding Fall/Winter. However, a student will be eligible if they have completed a minimum of 24 units of course weight in the previous Fall/Winter.
- Graduating students:
- Students in the final year of their program are eligible for all graduating awards regardless of the course load taken in the final year.
- To be eligible for awards in any year, the student must have completed their degree requirements by April 30 of that year. This includes students who completed requirements in the Spring/Summer term of the previous year or in December of the previous year.
- The GPA of graduating students will be calculated based on their last 60 units of course weight, unless the terms of the award specify a different method.
- Co-operative Education students:
- Co-operative Education students must complete a minimum of two study terms since the period of their last eligibility to be eligible for awards. A study term is defined as Spring/Summer combined, Fall, or Winter.
- To be considered for awards for which academic achievement is the sole criterion, Co-operative Education students must have completed a minimum of 15 units of coursework in each of Fall and Winter, or 15 units of course weight in one of Fall or Winter and 12 units of course weight in Spring/Summer.
- To be considered for awards based on criteria in addition to or other than academic achievement, Co-operative Education students must have completed a minimum of 12 units of coursework in each of two study terms.
- Awards open solely to Co-operative Education students may specify different criteria, in which case, those criteria rule.
- Outgoing Exchange students:
- Students approved to go on a School of Business or University of Alberta exchanges will be eligible for all awards for exchange students regardless of the amount of coursework taken in the previous Fall/Winter.
- Students approved to go on a School of Business or University of Alberta exchanges will be eligible for all awards for exchange students regardless of the GPA of the student in the previous Fall/Winter although GPA will be a factor in deciding recipients.
- Courses taken on exchange are accepted for transfer credit but grades are not converted. Therefore grades in courses taken on exchange cannot be used to calculate a GPA for the purpose of awards following return from an exchange.
- Awards that specify that they are open to Part-time students are open to all students regardless of the number of units of coursework completed.
- If an award specifies eligibility criteria different than these stated above, then the specific criteria of the award will be used. But where the award is silent on any of these matters, then these rules apply.
