Eligibility

Important information:

  • For undergraduate applications for a research-based experience, a written institutional collaboration and student exchange agreement or memorandum of understanding between the Canadian institution and the candidate's home institution is desirable but not mandatory.
    • Instead of an agreement, U of A requires undergraduate research candidates to provide a Letter of Invitation from the University of Alberta professor who has agreed to supervise you.
    • Please review the How to Apply section for details of how to contact University of Alberta faculty members who may be willing to supervise your research, along with further information about International Agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoU).
  • For graduate applications, an inter-institutional agreement is recommended but not required.
    • If there is no existing exchange agreement, graduate applications which involve a new or established collaboration between professors from U of A and the candidate's home institution will be accepted.
    • Please ensure the people writing your supporting documents outline the benefits of this collaboration between professors and how your research stay will contribute to the strengthening of these research relationships (in detail with specifics, not generalities).
  • Applications and required supporting documents must be submitted to University of Alberta International by research candidates (international students) through Horizons by the internal institutional deadline of March 6, 2025 to be screened for eligibility and completeness. Please note, this link to the Horizons application form is not yet live for the 2025-2026 application cycle, but you may start to prepare by collecting your application materials. We anticipate the Horizons application link going live in early February 2025.
  • Canadian institutions such as U of A reviews applications and then must apply to EduCanada for the scholarship on behalf of eligible students before the deadline of Tuesday, March 18, 2025. The Inbound International Internship Coordinator in the U of A's International Student & Visitor Services unit is responsible for coordinating these applications.
  • Applicants must be enrolled full-time in their proposed degree program at the time of application. Applicants must be continuing students who plan to return to their home country immediately after their research stay is finished.
    • For example, if the application period falls during a gap between the student's Master's and PhD enrollment, unfortunately, they will not be deemed eligible for the current scholarship year. If this situation applies to you, it is recommended that you apply next year.
  • Scholarships cannot be deferred and are not renewable.
  • Priority will be given to candidates who have not previously received a scholarship under any Global Affairs Canada scholarship program.
  • Scholarships are not taxable for either the Canadian institution or the scholarship recipient.
  • University of Alberta does not charge tuition and fees to Global Affairs Canada International Scholarship recipients.

Applicants are expected to review the Scholarship Terms and Conditions to confirm their eligibility for the program in advance of contacting a potential University of Alberta host professor. Specific information can be viewed by clicking on the name of the scholarship:
