Meet Flavio Preti, member of the class of Fall 2021 graduating with a master’s in ecology from the Department of Biological Sciences.

This year, the University of Alberta is celebrating the achievements of our graduates with a virtual convocation ceremony on November 19. As we acknowledge the achievements of our graduating class, we’re sharing just a few of the amazing stories of our graduates.

This week, Flavio Preti graduates with a master’s in ecology from the Department of Biological Sciences. Hear from him a spark of initial inspiration that drew him to campus, broadening his scientific knowledge through mentorship and events, and the warm memory of winning his first teaching award.

Congratulations, Flavio!

What led you to pick the University of Alberta for your studies?

I was drawn to the University of Alberta by my supervisor, Dr. Maya Evenden. I read some of her publications while conducting research at another university, and I became fascinated by her approach to chemical ecology. Moreover, I was invited to visit the university campus while I was still working on my BSc., and I simply fell in love! I was astonished by the quality of research conducted at U of A; in that moment, I knew I had made the right decision.

Tell us about your experience in the Faculty of Science.

The Faculty of Science has allowed me to significantly broaden my scientific knowledge. Participating in events, seminars, and lectures has offered a tremendous amount of help in understanding and fulfilling my own scientific curiosity. Additionally, it was through these opportunities that I met some of the most wonderful people.

What is one of your favourite memories from your time at the U of A?

I will never forget the moment I received my first teaching award; the gratitude my students expressed was truly overwhelming! Being recognized for sharing my passion has to be one of the most wonderful feelings I have ever experienced.

What advice do you have for current and future students in the Faculty of Science?

The U of A has some of the finest researchers and professors in the country — take full advantage of this opportunity. Spend time networking, volunteering in laboratories, and asking questions! Not only will this launch you into your career, but it will also help you understand what you are truly passionate about.

How have you spent your time during COVID-19 distancing?

I decided to travel back home to Italy to be close to my family.

How do you plan on celebrating convocation?

Treating myself to a nice dinner with friends!

What's next after graduation?

I am currently working as a research technician at Canopy Growth Corporation. I am very excited about this opportunity, and I owe it to my supervisor, Dr. Maya Evenden. The cannabis industry is still young and full of potential, I am excited to see where this will lead me!
