This year, the University of Alberta is celebrating the achievements of our graduates with a virtual convocation ceremony on June 25. As we acknowledge the achievements of our graduating class, we’re sharing just a few of the amazing stories of our graduates.
Meet Mizuki Lopez, graduating with a BSc Honors in the neuroscience program, as she reflects on the unique opportunities in the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Science and the importance of giving yourself room to breathe.
Congratulations, Mizuki!
What brought you to the U of A?
When I applied in high school, the University of Alberta was my local university. At the moment it felt like the obvious next step. I truly enjoyed my program and being at the UofA allowed me to maintain my friendships from high school, while still meeting new people.
Tell us about your experience in the Faculty of Science.
It started in the giant lecture halls filled with confused faces and having to wait 10 minutes to get through the hall between CCIS and Chemistry (you know the one). That part never changed, but as each semester passed the faces started to become recognizable. Making connections with other (equally as lost) students and professors will always have an impression on my experience in this faculty. I’ve always felt supported by the professors and staff that have helped me through my degree, and I will always appreciate everyone that I’ve met along the way.
What is one of your favourite memories from your time at the U of A?
Nothing beats getting through a tough week of midterms and celebrating with friends over some wings.
What advice do you have for current and future students at the Faculty of Science?
Through all the stress of course work, don’t forget to give yourself the care and attention you need! I think as an undergraduate student in such a large faculty, it can sometimes feel a little intimidating. When you’re surrounded by fellow high-achieving students, it can at times be inspiring and motivating, but at other times worrisome and makes you question whether you’re doing enough. Talk to friends, reach out if you need help, and give yourself a little room to breathe every now and then. It’s all good.
How have you spent your free time during the COVID-19 pandemic?
So many Netflix parties. Having a lot of free time at home has also helped me to find new podcasts to listen to while keeping up my hobby of illustration.
How do you plan on celebrating convocation?
All I need are some cupcakes and champagne.
What's next after graduation?
My interests are primarily within the field of psychiatry, so I’m looking forward to pursuing studies that will lead me towards a career in mental health.
