News Staff - 18 November 2020

In 2020, convocation at the University of Alberta is taking place virtually. Join us on November 20th when our graduates, proud family and friends, and instructors will celebrate the class of Fall 2020’s hard work and achievements.

As the celebration approaches, meet Ayooluwa Oladosu, graduating with a bachelor of science from n the Department of Computing Science, as she looks back on her time at UAlberta, her participation in the Science Internship Program, and where her studies will take her next.

What led you to pick UAlberta for your studies?

University of Alberta is a great school that offered me the opportunity to explore a new city while still being close to Calgary to visit friends and family during breaks and holidays.

Tell us about your experience in the Faculty of Science.

My years in the Faculty of Science were spent delving deeper into my passion for computing science. I had started off my first year taking courses in different departments and faculties, unsure of what I wanted to pursue most in university.

But once I had taken my first computing science course, something about the class just clicked with me, and I was sold. I knew I had found my passion and area of study. From then on, every class, every semester, and every year was a chance to explore all that computing science had to offer, and both the Faculty of Science and Department of Computing Science delivered. I was able to enjoy and learn about a wide array of topics under the instruction of great professors and apply my knowledge at an internship at the Faculty of Science through the Science Internship Program

What is one of your favourite memories from your time at UAlberta?

One of my favourite memories at UAlberta was Lister Dodgeball League. Living in residence fostered a sense of community amongst everyone and the dodgeball league was like icing on the cake. Dodgeball was always something to look forward to and was a highlight in my week. It brought friendly competition, unforgettable moments, silly rivalries, and just a full hour to have fun with your floormates week after week. As we say in Lister, dodgeball is everything to everyone.

What advice do you have for current and future students at the Faculty of Science?

Pursuing your degree is a great time to develop skills, find new passions, and rediscover old ones anew by taking different classes, joining clubs, and exploring the city. University can be a big change of pace, but it offers a chance to grow and make friends along the way. Breathe and take a moment to appreciate how far you’ve come and how much further you can still go!

How have you spent your time during COVID-19 distancing?

I’ve been spending the extra time with family and learning a few new baking recipes. Most importantly, I finally finished that 3000-piece puzzle!

How do you plan on celebrating convocation?

I’ll be tuning in to the online convocation with my family and some ginger ale.

What's next after graduation?

I am looking forward to taking a few extra classes and applying for a master’s in computing science.
