Today, meet Caitlin Neutzling who is graduating with a bachelor of science honors degree in environmental earth science from the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. Neutzling shares her experience in the Faculty of Science—and some advice for new and prospective students on the opportunity for field schools and student internships.
What led you to pick UAlberta for your studies?
The University of Alberta was known to me as having a high quality science program and a good reputation as a research facility.
Tell us about your experience in the Faculty of Science.
I originally applied to major in biology and minor in math, but very early on realized I wanted to specialize in environmental earth science. This program gave me a wide range of knowledge from structural geology and hydrogeology to climate change and environmental management/policy to ecology and restoration. As part of the Faculty of Science I was lucky enough to complete both a 12-month internship in British Columbia and complete an undergraduate thesis while working as an undergraduate research assistant with Assistant Professor Monireh Faramarzi.
What is one of your favourite memories from your time at UAlberta?
As part of the environmental earth science program I completed two field school courses, one of which involved field work in the Canadian Rockies, and one which involved field work in Costa Rica. Both were irreplaceable learning experiences as well as incredible life experiences in unique parts of the world.
What advice do you have for current and future students at the Faculty of Science?
I definitely recommend getting involved with the Science Internship Program, completing a work experience term is a valuable professional and personal experience. Taking a field school course is also a great experience if the opportunity presents itself.
How have you spent your time during COVID-19 distancing?
I have been picking up hobbies that fell to the wayside during university, including playing piano and guitar, camping, and hiking.
How do you plan on celebrating convocation?
I will be celebrating with dinner with my family.
What's next after graduation?
My original plan had been to travel, but currently my plan is to find a job in environmental consulting—though it depends on what the world throws at us next!
