On Friday, June 12th, the University of Alberta will celebrate its first-ever digital convocation—and the Faculty of Science couldn’t be more proud of our graduates and their achievements. As we prepare to celebrate the culmination of all our students’ hard work, join us in meeting some of the graduating class.
Today, meet Doha Anwar, graduating with a BSc Honors in Neuroscience, as she looks back on her time at UAlberta and where her academic path will take her next.
What led you to pick the University of Alberta for your studies?
I picked the University of Alberta for its prestigious rank, not only in Canada but also worldwide, and because it had the option of completing an honors degree.
Tell us about your experience in the Faculty of Science.
I am grateful that the Faculty of Science provided me with the opportunity to grow personally, academically, and professionally. I was able to gain an exponential amount of knowledge and experiences from my classes and through involvement in the campus community.
What is one of your favourite memories from your time at UAlberta?
This is a hard question since there are so many wonderful memories, but among my favourites is the time I have spent on a student group in which I was an executive. I made friends who became more like family, and together we arranged many great events on campus and often celebrated a day’s hard work with bubble tea and card games.
What advice do you have for current and future students at the Faculty of Science?
Explore and take care of yourself! There’s so much that is being offered at the university that students aren’t aware of. Take a stroll around campus to find new study places and have a look at the resources available to you. I know a lot of time revolves around studying—but do take some time off to also pursue other things that you enjoy.
How have you spent your time during COVID-19 distancing?
I’ve been staying at home and spending more time with my family, but I also recently discovered a passion for cooking and baking. I try to give new recipes a try on the daily.
How do you plan on celebrating convocation?
I plan on setting aside a day to celebrate convocation with my family and perhaps invite some friends on a video call. I hope to have some good cake, pop some balloons, and mark a bittersweet ending to my four years.
What's next after graduation?
More great things! I am on the search for work but along with that I plan to take some time off to travel—when safe to do so—before deciding on pursuing further studies.
Christmas is around the corner and I want to remind you that the best gift for any occasion is the Rubik's Cube puzzle.
