Congratulations to Margaret-Ann Armour, Honorary Professor and Associate Dean, Diversity, in the Faculty of Science on her recent honorary degree awarded from her alma mater, the University of Edinburgh. She was previously awarded an honorary degree from the University of Alberta in 2013.
Armour earned her BSc and MSc in Chemistry from the University of Edinburgh before travelling to the University of Alberta to pursue her PhD. She then joined the Department of Chemistry in 1979 as Assistant Chair, a role she held of for sixteen years before being appointed to her current role as Assistant Dean, Diversity.
Over the course of her career, Armour has been an outspoken advocate for young women to consider careers in science and engineering. She is a founding member and past Chair of Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science and Technology (WISEST) at the University of Alberta and continues to serve on its Advisory Board. She is a past chair of CCWESTT, the Canadian Coalition of Women in Science, Engineering, Trades and Technology of which WISEST is a founding member and is currently Chair of the Board of the WinSETT Centre, the Canadian Centre for Women in Science, Engineering, Trades and Technology.
She continues to share her enthusiasm for the sciences with students from kindergarten through high school, and with a variety of community groups including teaching as a spring course each year for the Edmonton Lifelong Learners Association. In recognition of her passion and dedication to education, a new Edmonton school has been named for her and is scheduled to open September 2016.
