Program Outline
The Bachelor of Science in Radiation Therapy degree program in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta consists of three distinct components:
1. Pre-Professional Year (Year 1)
Learners take a set of prerequisite courses, and also apply for entrance to the Radiation Therapy Program.
2. Didactic Courses (Years 2, 3 & 4)
Learners will experience classroom teaching in the areas of:
- Medical physics, radiation safety and radiation risk.Cancer biology, cancer treatments and the clinical management of patients with cancer.
- Radiobiology and interactions of radiation with tissue.
- Cross-sectional anatomy.
- Principles of imaging as related to radiation therapy.
- Research methodology.
3. Clinical Courses (Years 2, 3 & 4)
- Treatment planning.Clinical simulation.
- Interactions with and care of patients.
- Clinical aspects of radiation treatment delivery and verification.
- Clinical research (via a research project).
The clinical practicums will take place across the province at centres providing radiation therapy treatment services.
Current centres are the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary, Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, Central Alberta Cancer Centre in Red Deer and the Jack Ady Cancer Centre in Lethbridge. Future sites will include Grande Prairie, Alberta.
