Sponsored International Trainees

Postgraduate training agreements for residency and fellowship positions are currently in place between the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and many sponsoring agencies including the following:

  • Bahrain Defense Force Royal Medical Services
  • Istanbul Medical Centre
  • Kuwait Ministry of Health
  • Oman Medical Specialty Board
  • Ministry of Higher Education Saudi Arabia (Saudi Arabian Cultural Bureau in Canada)
  • Ministry of Higher Education United Arab Emirates

APPLICATION PROCESS

Important Submission Information

  • All international trainee applications must be submitted directly by the sponsoring agency to the PGME Office at pgspon@ualberta.ca. 
  • Applications sent directly to programs will not be accepted and will not be considered eligible.
  • Applications sent directly by trainees will not be accepted and will not be considered eligible.

Application Deadline

The due date to submit applications for a July 1st start date is typically the previous July 31st (i.e. one year prior to the start date), unless communicated directly to the sponsoring agencies otherwise. The Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Office will forward applications to the applicable program after verifying the sponsor.

Applications from sponsors received after the annual deadline will not be accepted, will not be considered eligible, and will not be forwarded to programs.


ELIGIBILITY & LIMITATIONS

  1. Applicants must meet the licensing criteria for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) for postgraduate education.
  2. Unless exempt, applicants need to complete an academic version of an English Language Proficiency (ELP) test within 24 months before submitting their CPSA application. Applicants can take any of the ELP exams (IELTS Academic, OET Medicine, or CELPIP General) listed on the CPSA website, and must achieve the minimum passing grade, per the CPSA. Proof of ELP must be submitted at the time of application.
  3. Applicants cannot be a Permanent Resident of Canada nor a Canadian Citizen.
  4. Applicants must meet all Alberta Health Services (AHS) requirements, including, but not limited to, a satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search.

RESIDENCY APPLICATIONS

Residency applications must include: 

  1. Letter of Financial Support
  2. Curriculum Vitae 
  3. Letter of Intent 
  4. Three (3) Letters of Recommendation 
  5. Copy of Medical Degree 
  6. Full Medical School Transcripts 
  7. Successful results of one of the CPSA accepted English Language Proficiency tests 

Some residency programs may also require any or all of the following as part of the application:

FELLOWSHIP APPLICATIONS

Fellowship applications must include:

  1. Letter of Financial Support
  2. Curriculum Vitae 
  3. Letter of Intent 
  4. Three (3) Letters of Recommendation 
  5. Successful results of one of the CPSA accepted English Language Proficiency tests 
  6. Other documents as indicated on the fellowship website
