The IDeaS Conference
Intellectuals from co-host institutions and invitees interested in organizations and algorithms gathered recently at the University of Alberta for the fifth annual IDeaS Conference, an event that blends social science with data analytics.
Merging human understanding with cutting-edge technology, these researchers from the U of A, University of British Columbia, Oxford University, and other universities sought to unravel and better understand some of the processes conjoining human actors with AI algorithms in phenomena as diverse as food ordering to medical screening. Part of their efforts was to use a culturally appreciative lens to examine human-algorithm interactions, something distinct from any current approaches to AI and organizations.
Fostering groundbreaking research and collaboration
Hosted annually since 2019, typically at the U of A, this year’s conference explored the evolving dynamics between humans and AI and how they can work together in greater harmony. With hot topics including "conjoined agency" and "automation by proxy,” researchers also shed light on the often-overlooked human labor that underpins AI technologies. Studies highlighted the critical roles people play in maintaining and improving AI systems, from social epidemiologists in France to courier collectives in other parts of Europe.
Additionally, researchers examined organizational challenges, conflicts, and transformations prompted by AI integration. These ranged from contests between traditional and data-driven decision-making in Indian banks to corporate restructuring around AI systems. An analysis of a restaurant delivery app in a European city revealed complex human-AI interpretative factors that made even finding the right home in crowded cities in a timely manner difficult. Another study examined AI-assisted lab testing, highlighting gained efficiencies but also resistance from lab staff.
In today’s rapidly evolving business environment, understanding and leveraging data analytics is essential for both academic and professional growth. Taking a more interpretive, cultural approach that focuses on conjoined AI-human algorithms is an overlooked but powerful approach in this area. The iDeaS Group and its associated event are committed to promoting this approach and bridging gaps between different departments and disciplines, fostering a more integrated approach to research and practical application.
