Get to know...Alice Beauchesne
Introducing Get to Know..., a monthly feature that shines a spotlight on the incredible faculty and staff who make the Alberta School of Business thrive. This month, we're excited to highlight Alice Beauchesne, academic department coordinator with the SEM and MBEL departments. We learn about her favourite travel destination, hobbies and who she'd most want to have dinner with!
What’s a fun fact about you that most people wouldn’t know?
I have a passion for traveling and exploring new destinations as well as learning about history, anthropology and evolution. I’ve travelled extensively and visited over 20 different countries in four continents. I even lived abroad for a few years in France and in Peru, but lived most of my life in Edmonton. I’m an adventurer at heart!
What’s your favorite way to spend a weekend or day off?
I spend most of my weekends with family and friends sharing dinners and stories of our week. I enjoy quality time with my loved ones, whether it's a night out or staying in to play games, watch movies and make food together.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Greece! I went on my dream vacation with my husband this summer to Greece and I would go back every year if I could. We explored Athens, the island of Santorini, and the island of Corfu. There is so much more to see and would now like to explore other parts of Greece. It is my favorite country that I have ever travelled to and it checks off all the boxes: rich in history and culture, great weather, friendly people, amazing food and beautiful scenery.
What’s a hobby or skill you’ve recently picked up (or would like to try)?
I like to express myself through different creative outlets and enjoy exploring different art forms, whether that means trying a new recipe or new dance class as well as painting, crafting, photography and journaling. I have a background in fashion design, so I have experience in sewing, weaving and costume design. My next project is to learn traditional Slavic beadwork to get in touch with my roots.
What’s a book, movie or TV show you’re currently enjoying?
Right now I’m really into a show called “Vikings: Valhalla.” The history buff in me enjoys watching a historical era and ancient culture through story. It's exciting to escape into a different reality, even though it's a semi-fictional period drama.
What inspires or motivates you the most in your day-to-day life?
My grandmother (babcia, in Polish) is a huge inspiration for me. She went through so much in her life, including World War II, becoming an orphan after the war, living through difficult communist times and immigrating three times in her lifetime (from Poland to Ukraine at age 4, as a refugee back to Poland at age 14, and starting a new life in Canada at age 46). She has persevered and adapted through so many life-changing events and circumstances. My babcia has taught me many important life lessons and often reminds me that you can do anything you put your mind to because she is a living example of that.
If you could have dinner with any historical or famous figure, who would it be and why?
Cleopatra. She is a mystery and her story has been passed down through legends. There is not much archaeological evidence about her, so I would like to know more about the historical facts of her life. She is known as one of the top famous people in history and made quite an impression as a woman leader so I find her intriguing.
Can you share a bit about your role and what brought you to the Alberta School of Business?
I am the business academic department coordinator for the departments of SEM and MBEL. As an ADC, I provide specialized administrative support in the operations of academic programs including HR, recruitment, financials, research account support, evaluations for FEC/ATSEC, communication and events.
I came to the school because I wanted to advance and challenge myself in a role that aligns with previous and current experience. I am a University of Alberta alumna and completed a bachelor of science degree in human ecology while completing my minor at the Alberta School of Business. I have a background in marketing, research and entrepreneurial work which aligns well with the departments I support.
What’s been your most memorable moment at the Alberta School of Business so far?
I just started at the Alberta School of Business this past September. My first week in my role was the most memorable. I was given a warm welcome and introduced to so many lovely individuals. What stands out to me is all the time and effort my colleagues give to support one another.
What’s one piece of advice you’d share with a new colleague joining the school?
The school hosts many social events, whether it’s team bonding or training sessions. I encourage newcomers to attend to get to know your colleagues as well as gain additional support and information about the faculty. Everyone is so kind and welcoming at the Alberta School of Business.
