ELR For Employers

The Experiential Learning Record (ELR) is an official university document that outlines all of the activities a student was a part of on campus. The ELR helps students identify their transferable skills, which in turn allows students to better articulate their strengths when applying for jobs. Students participating in the ELR will be more labour market-ready upon graduation.

Employer Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ELR?

The Experiential Learning Record (ELR) is an official university document that outlines all of the activities a student was a part of on campus. The ELR helps students identify their transferable skills, which in turn allows students to better articulate their strengths when applying for jobs. As an employer, what is the benefit of an ELR?

The Alberta School of Business understands that employers are looking for well-rounded candidates. We believe that one of the best ways to display a student’s diverse skill set is for them to reflect on their own experiences and identify transferable skills they have gained. The ELR can help you with your recruitment efforts by detailing all of the ways students have gained skills and experience beyond the classroom walls - hence providing a better picture of the skills a candidate can offer.

How will the ELR help me during the recruitment cycles?

The ELR provides an easy to read supplementary document outlining the student’s extracurricular activities by showcasing what they learned and accomplished during their time at the Alberta School of Business. Reviewing the ELR will provide your recruitment team a better snapshot of the student and highlight experience that tends to be missing from traditional resumes and cover letters. This document is certified by the school and you can be assured the information is accurate.

How does the Alberta School of Business validate the ELR?

Activities included in the ELR catalogue are thoroughly vetted to ensure they meet the following criteria:

  • The activity must have a clear attachment to the university with a recognized faculty or staff member that oversees the activity
  • The activity must provide an opportunity for active engagement (for example, positions or activities that merely symbolize a student holding a title but not actually following through with programming/ duties/ etc. will not qualify to be added - the tasks/responsibilities of the role are what we call validation requirements)
  • Each student must meet validation requirements for their role before it is approved to be included on a students ELR record. This is the responsibility of the aforementioned supervising faculty or staff member.
  • The activity's positions must be connected to intentional competencies/skills, as laid out in the School of Business competencies framework.
What kind of experiences can be recorded?

There are many types of experiences that can be recorded from ELR-Approved courses, leadership positions on student clubs, to educational enrichment webinars.

Will this affect a student’s GPA?

The ELR does not affect a student’s GPA.

Is the ELR mandatory?

No, the ELR is not mandatory.

When will the ELR be available?

The ELR will be launching Spring 2021.

Do other universities have an ELR Program?

Yes! Over 50 schools across Canada (ie University of Calgary, Macewan University, UBC) as well as some educational institutions in the USA have similar ELR programs for students.
