Adaeze Wobo-Onyejiaka, MBA ’21, BMgt’14, says choosing to pursue her MBA at a critical time in her life – after working in the financial services industry for six years and as she was preparing for maternity leave – has helped her level up her career as a risk management professional, while connecting in with various other communities.

Adaeze’s time pursuing her MBA offered both flexibility and challenge, and ultimately helped her grow and develop the soft skills that have helped her advance in her career since graduating. Read on to find out how Adaeze integrated her Alberta School of Business MBA into both her personal and professional life, and how it has helped her in building the career and life she envisioned.

BAA: What first sparked your interest in financial services, the field in which you’ve worked for a decade now?

close up of Adaeze Wobo Onyejiaka looking at the cameraI never envisioned myself landing in the financial industry. My original goal was to work in the energy sector or oil and gas after earning my bachelor’s degree in business economics. My favourite subjects — macroeconomics, financial accounting, and corporate finance — provided a solid foundation for my eventual career in finance.

My journey began in 2015 when I attended a career fair at TD Bank. The hiring manager took an interest in me, and I was offered a position. Initially, I was apprehensive about the pressures and fast pace of the industry while maintaining my composure. However, these challenges fuelled my excitement as each day presented unique opportunities to grow and adapt. I soon realized how much I loved my work, especially being part of my clients’ financial journeys and helping them achieve their financial goals.

Finance is the bedrock of any economy, and being able to provide tailored solutions to individuals and businesses allows me to contribute to the broader economy. This aspect of my job is deeply satisfying and has solidified my passion for the financial industry.

BAA: How did your career evolve leading up to your decision to apply to the Alberta School of Business MBA program?

My career in the financial industry has taken on various dimensions. I spent six years in an advisory role, managing clients’ investment and credit portfolios. Eventually, I felt the need to branch out and explore risk management. Concurrently, I was preparing for maternity leave with my second child and saw this as the right time to further my education, supported by my family.

My mother’s visit was a turning point; we discussed my ambition to advance my education and the support I would need. I viewed this as an opportunity to invest in myself, to become a more well-rounded individual, and to build my personal brand. I wanted to step outside my comfort zone, learn more about myself, and understand the world beyond my family and office. By engaging with clients of different calibers, I aspired to better serve them. Given my time away from school, pursuing an MBA seemed like the natural progression for me.

BAA: What made the MBA program feel like the right next step in your career?

For me, the MBA program was a way to push the boundaries of my comfort zone and challenge myself in new ways. It offered an incredible opportunity to network with alumni and students from diverse backgrounds and cultures. The MBA program paved the way for my career advancement into Risk Management by providing extensive professional knowledge in finance.

Moreover, it allowed me to develop vital soft skills necessary for the workplace and hone a strategic and innovative thinking mindset. After six years in the workforce, I felt the need to level up, remain competitive in the job market, and enhance my job prospects. In the ever-changing business world, staying up-to-date with learning, whether in a classroom setting or from colleagues, is crucial for developing both soft skills and technical knowledge.

Pursuing an MBA at the University of Alberta was the best decision for my career. It allowed me to invest in myself, better serve my clients, and lead a successful life and career. This leap furthered my professional journey in ways I had always envisioned.

BAA: What was your experience like at the Alberta School of Business? What are some of your favourite memories?

Initially, I faced uncertainty. In August 2020, I began my MBA program while seven months pregnant. Walking into my first classroom with my prominent belly, I felt out of place. However, my apprehensions were soon put to rest by the warm welcome from my professor and peers. They offered the flexibility I needed to balance my workload and personal needs.

I also connected with a supportive community of mums who provided invaluable advice and encouragement. Some of my fondest memories involve my classmates assisting me up and down the stairs. I had the chance to forge lifelong friendships. When my professors learned about my situation, they provided flexible alternatives to reduce any stress, making me feel fully supported.

One of my most cherished memories was attending my in-person graduation with my son by my side in the spring of 2022.

BAA: How has your MBA contributed to your career post-graduation?

The MBA program has played a pivotal role in my success as a risk analyst. It has sharpened my ability to think critically, analyze complex problems, and devise creative solutions. Additionally, it has helped me build my personal brand and gain confidence in taking on more responsibilities and projects, allowing me to demonstrate strong leadership skills. The program has also expanded my perspective, allowing me to better serve the communities I’m part of while fostering personal growth. Ultimately, it provided a solid foundation for self-reflection and charting the course of my career.

BAA: What advice would you give to those who are thinking about pursuing an MBA?

Embarking on an MBA program is an exciting and significant decision, but it is a worthwhile step in your professional journey. Before you take this leap, it’s essential to consider your circumstances, including your financial situation, family responsibilities, and career goals. Reflect on your intentions for pursuing an MBA and how it will fit into your short- and long-term plans.

Carefully select a program that aligns with your goals and aspirations. Remember, you are not alone on this journey — there are career advisors and coaches available to support you. Leverage these resources to ensure you stay on track toward achieving your objectives.

Though it may seem intimidating, taking this bold step can lead to a rewarding career and fulfilling life.
