Important Dates

Overview of GRI cycle and important dates

Please note: University of Alberta is only able to offer placement coordination after mid-February 2025. Mitacs typically provides the full list of matched Mitacs Globalink Research Internship participants to U of A in mid-February. Until then, we do not receive any indication of who has been matched, even as host professors and students may be emailed with this information starting in January.

Planned communication to selected students and host professors will follow as soon as possible after our office receives the full list of participants placed at the University of Alberta (North Campus & Augustana campuses).

April to June: Faculty application
Faculty members submit research projects to Mitacs.

July to August: Faculty application vetting
Projects are reviewed by Mitacs, and decisions are communicated to professors. All successful projects are made available to student applicants in an online database.

August to September: Student application
International students submit applications and select research projects from the online database.

October: Student application vetting
Mitacs conducts an eligibility review of student applications.

November to January: Matching
Mitacs provides professors with a shortlist of student candidates for their project. Professors are then asked to review student applications, conduct interviews and then rank the applicants in order of suitability. Mitacs collects student and professor rankings, then finalizes offers to students. Final results are announced in February.

February to April: Pre-internship preparation
Successful students start working with their Canadian host professors to arrange pre-internship details, while Mitacs oversees logistics and coordinates with university administrative offices such as University of Alberta International.

May to October: Internship
Globalink research interns must arrive in Canada to start their internships between May 1 through July 31, and work with supervising professors for 12 weeks on their research project.
