All IVSP students are required to take at least one English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course to better prepare them for academic studies in English. These are taught through the English Language School at the University of Alberta, while students receive support and advising from IVSP staff.
Students who do not have one of the required IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo scores as outlined below must contact ivspuab@ualberta.ca before applying.

About the Courses
EAP 135 focuses on general and specialized English language development and grammar. The course stresses clear and accurate language use, building confidence and fluency in an academic setting. It is 7 weeks long, with students attending classes for 16.25 hours weekly. The final grade is CR (Pass) or NC (Fail) and it is a non-credit bearing course.
EAP 136 focuses on similar skills as EAP 135 but extends to 13 weeks, with students attending classes for 18 hours weekly. The final grade is a letter grade and it is a non-credit bearing course.
EAP 137 supports international undergraduate students transitioning to and succeeding in a research-intensive Canadian university. It is 13 weeks long, with students attending classes for 6 hours weekly. The final grade is a letter grade and it is a 3-credit course. All courses are listed on the undergraduate transcript.
