How to Apply

Applying to study or work abroad is easier than ever! The application process is two-fold: pre-nomination and post-nomination. Follow the instructions below and you'll have your application done in no time.

TIP: Start your application at least 2 weeks before the set deadline in order to complete all of the required steps in time. Early submissions are always welcome! See our deadlines here.

Internships

  • Explore the nearly 200 programs we offer by searching our Program Finder
  • Choose up to three internship programs you want to participate in. We ask that you provide us with three options just in case we aren't able to match you with your first choice. We'll do our best to place you in your first choice, but some programs are more competitive than others.
2. Create an online application account and Apply to Horizons

Create an account on Horizons, our online application portal. All applications to education abroad programs must be completed in Horizons.

Applying in Horizons:

Step 1: Submit an unofficial transcript along with your GPA. We will determine your eligibility based on this portion of your application. If you are eligible, we will send you an email notifying you to proceed to Step 2-5. This may take up to 2 weeks but often happens much faster.
Step 2: Complete the pre-nomination steps. Required documents for each program will be listed and provided in your online application.
Step 3: Submit your application!

3. Get nominated by Education Abroad

Congratulations, your application to Education has been successful! Now, Education Abroad will nominate you to your host institution/program. You'll be contacted regarding what to do next to complete your University of Alberta application post-nomination steps, including a reminder to pay your $250 nomination fee.

Exchanges and Summer Programs

  • Explore the nearly 200 programs we offer by searching our Program Finder
  • Look for programs that offer enough courses that interest you that are taught in English and/or any other language in which you are fluent.
  • Choose the top three institutions which you want to attend. We ask that you provide us with three options just in case we aren't able to match you with your first choice. We'll do our best to place you in your first choice, but some programs are more competitive than others.  Please do not start three separate applications, however; you only need to work on ONE application showing your top three options.

3. Get nominated by Education Abroad

Congratulations! You've completed the pre-nomination steps and we can now consider your application for nomination. Nominations will be processed after the application deadline.

If we can nominate you to first choice institution, we will. (On rare occasions, we sometimes have to nominate students to their alternate or 3rd choice institutions.)

Once your nomination has started, you will receive an email explaining your post-nomination steps and what is required of you to complete your University of Alberta application (including paying a $250 nomination fee). For all exchanges and summer programs (excluding e3) you must also complete an application for the host institution to which you have been nominated.

If you are not nominated, you will receive an email explaining why.

After your nomination has started, your application moves into the post-nomination stage. Go to the After Submitting My Application section to learn about the next steps you'll need to take to finalize your application.
