Graduate Teaching + Learning Program
Learn how to become an effective educator. The Graduate Teaching and Learning Program (GTLP) is a multi-tier program designed to help you excel in your role as a teaching assistant and beyond.
You’ll start with the foundations of teaching and learning in higher education to engage with the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) research and practices.
You’ll learn first-hand from some of the most dedicated, inspiring and award-winning instructors through high-quality teaching and learning workshops and courses. And you’ll have the chance to engage with faculty working on SoTL research projects. The GTLP is open to all University of Alberta graduate students and postdoctoral fellows (PDF). The workshops and courses are free, pass/fail and aren’t for credit.
As you complete each level and meet all the requirements, you’ll be issued letters of completion. Notations will also be added to graduate students’ transcripts.

Getting Started: Workshop Registration + Program Enrolment
The GTLP is a tiered program, where you complete the levels in sequence.
Register for a Level 1 workshop (offered in August and January) through campusBRIDGE to get started. Once you attend a Level 1 workshop, you will be invited to enrol in the program by self-registering in eClass.
You may also choose to attend Level 1 workshops without enrolling in the program. Your attendance will be recorded in campusBRIDGE (for the Professional Development Requirement).
Level 1: Foundations - Workshop Series
Dates: August 19 - 30, 2024
Level 2: Practicum - Blended Course

Level 3: Pedagogy and Course Design - Course
Dates: May 31 - June 28, 2024
The GTLP exists to help graduate students become outstanding educators — while advancing the U of A’s broader teaching mission. The goals are desired outcomes of the program and include:
- Recognizing and supporting graduate students as a primary point of teaching contact for undergraduate students
- Transforming graduate students in their teaching and learning practice
- Inspiring and modeling innovation and evidence-based teaching practices
- Cultivating a culture of exceptional teaching by providing opportunities for persistent, intentional effort focused on self-reflection and personal growth
- Providing graduate students with outstanding professional development training in teaching and learning that increases employability
- Supporting teaching excellence on campus by assisting departments in the development of their teaching practices with teaching assistants (TAs)
- Equipping TAs for their roles in the classroom and laboratory. Ensuring faculty members have a heightened awareness of teaching and learning issues for TAs
- Advancing Shape: The University Strategic Plan 2023-2033 to research, educate and engage with purpose.
Graduate students are not required to complete all four levels of the program. As noted above, levels must be completed in sequence. For graduate students, successful completion of each level is recorded on your transcript. Graduate students and PDFs will receive level completion letters for their teaching dossiers.
