What drew you to this area of study?
I have always wanted to pursue a career in health care, and found myself really enjoying laboratory work during university. Medical laboratory science was a perfect fit; it allowed me to contribute to patient care while applying my knowledge practically!
What are you most proud of from your time in the program?
Completing my research project was a massive accomplishment for me! I got to see how research informs the decision-making process in clinical settings, and how impactful that can be on patient outcomes.
How did you stay motivated when things got tough?
This is a very intensive program, and can sometimes be overwhelming. I stayed motivated by setting aside time for activities I enjoy and ensuring I have lots of variety in my life. I am also very lucky to have a fantastic support network of family and friends to cheer me on!
What are your go-to spots on campus?
My go-to spot on campus is the ECHA Student Commons. It is quiet and has plenty of natural light.
Did you receive any awards or funding for your studies?
I am extremely grateful to have received the University of Alberta Undergraduate Academic Scholarship, the Harry Koumarelas Scholarship, and the MLS Class of 1986 Clinical Practicum Leadership Award during my time in the program.
Did you have any interesting experiences outside of class?
Throughout my studies, I have worked as an aquatic instructor, volunteered as a piano teacher and served on the Medical Laboratory Science Students' Association's executive team. These experiences helped me discover my love of teaching and taught me important leadership skills. I would love to contribute to the education and development of new technologists in the future!
What advice would you give to students thinking of entering this program?
Make sure to maintain a healthy work-life balance, establish lasting relationships with your professors and peers, and most importantly, have fun and enjoy the ride. :)
What comes next for you?
I am excited to begin my career as a medical laboratory technologist here in Edmonton and see where that takes me!
