Dean's Message - A time for unity and support to our communities

Message from FoMD dean Richard Fedorak in support of those affected by the Humboldt Broncos tragedy.

12 April 2018

Over the past several days, Canadians have been deeply shaken by the tragic crash in Saskatchewan that prematurely took the lives of 16 people. On behalf of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, I want to express my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team.

The unexpected loss of life has shocked us all. It has directly affected members of our Faculty, numerous citizens of Edmonton and Alberta, as well as families in Saskatchewan and across Canada. Our thoughts, prayers and support are with all those who mourn the loss of their loved ones, and those who await the recovery of the survivors.

In the light of this tragedy, we also wish to acknowledge the devoted health professionals who have worked so hard to care for the victims. We want to recognize all first responders who quickly arrived to the scene and the medical staff who gave their very best in the hours that followed, including those who travelled to Saskatchewan to assist with transplantation efforts that saved the lives of many others. They have shown selfless commitment and compassion.

Such a response was complemented with the outpouring of collaboration from numerous members of the community, who have shown immense courage and have been inspired to help in different ways in the face of such sadness. Difficult times like these bring people together with love, strength and hope. As members of the health-care community, such tragedy affirms our role-to serve and support our fellow Canadians when they need us the most. Broncos Strong.
