Going to the dentist can sometimes bring nerve-racking thoughts. "Am I going to need a filling? Maybe a root canal?" "Will it hurt?" But did you know that most dental diseases are totally preventable?
Periodontist Liran Levin from the University of Alberta's School of Dentistry thinks that following a few simple steps and some dental care education can put all your dental angst at bay. More importantly, they can easily eliminate the need for complex dental treatment.
Almost 21 per cent of adults with teeth have, or have had, a moderate or severe periodontal gum problem. Six per cent of Canadian adults no longer have any natural teeth. Despite cavities being largely preventable, 57 per cent of children aged six to 11 have or have had a cavity and 96 per cent of adults have a history of cavities.
These numbers predict painful dental consultations that seem almost inevitable, but Liran will be sharing his expertise to help minimize this risk. His talk Teeth for Life - It's in your hands! on June 3, gives a short and informative overview of how to keep your oral cavity healthy and prevent periodontal disease.
"We want everyone to come and learn about how to keep their mouth healthy," said Levin. "If you only knew some basic secrets about your teeth, you could have your teeth healthy forever with a minimal need for dentists' interventions. We will show you how to do that."
