Canada's 150th anniversary has the nation reflecting on what defines our culture. Universal health care is certainly one of our country's unifying characteristics, but how to ensure the system serves all Canadians is a point of tremendous debate.
The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and the Institute for Health Economics co-host an intimate conversation of national importance with Danielle Martin at a special Dean's Lecture series. The free public book launch event takes place on Thursday, Feb. 9, 6:30 p.m. at Bernard Snell Hall, Walter C. Mackenzie (WCM) Health Sciences Centre at the University of Alberta (8440 112 Street).
Danielle Martin is an outspoken family physician and thought leader aiming to improve our health care system. In her new book BETTER NOW: Six Big Ideas to Improve Health Care for All Canadians, Martin outlines "Six big ideas" centered around a typical Canadian patient's experience, to bolster Canada's health care system:
· Ensure relationship-based primary health care for every Canadian
· Bring prescription drugs under Medicare
· Reduce unnecessary tests and interventions
· Reorganize health care delivery to reduce wait times and improve quality
· Implement a basic income guarantee
· Scale-up successful solutions across the country
While some may recognize Martin for calmly defending the Canadian health care system before a U.S. Senate subcommittee in Washington in March, 2014, Martin has been a proponent of single-payer health care long before she was thrust into the YouTube spotlight.
In her first year of practice, Martin helped launch Canadian Doctors for Medicare, a physician-led advocacy group who believes in "a high-quality, equitable, sustainable health system built on the best available evidence as the highest expression of Canadians caring for one another."
Martin is now an assistant professor of family medicine and health care policy at the University of Toronto and vice-president, Medical Affairs & Health System Solutions. She is a health policy expert who regularly appears as a medical contributor on CBC's The National and as a health columnist for Châtelaine Magazine.
Martin is an in-demand speaker on a variety of health and health care topics nationally. It is a coup for the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and the Institute for Health Economics to host her on campus.
Danielle Martin will be at the University of Alberta on February 9 delivering a lecture titled Better Now: Healing Health Care through Relationships and Innovations as part of the Dean's Lecture Series. This free event is open to all. Following the lecture there will be a book signing and a reception sponsored by the Department of Psychiatry.
