The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry has marked the close of its centennial year with a major achievement. The Faculty has been profiled in a publication of the Cambridge University Students' Union (CUSU) entitled CUSU Strategies for Success 2013. The book is subtitled Employers, education, excellence & careers and includes profiles of "specially selected national and international educational institutions." Cambridge is one of the top-ranked universities in the world and the FoMD is the only medical school in Canada identified for inclusion in the publication.
The Faculty was identified based on the suggestion of a research team that liaised closely with CUSU's editorial advisory panel to determine the suitability of institutions by assessing available data in numerous areas, according to Dhruti Patel, head of client relations for St James's House, the company that produced the publication. "Broadly speaking, the principle considerations for selection include achievements, reputation, rankings, challenges faced and progress made," she said.
The students' union at Cambridge University aims to champion institutional excellence, according to Ms. Patel. She added that the publication was produced to assist students, alumni and others seeking guidance and opportunities by providing authoritative postgraduate study and careers advice while showcasing a selection of best practice institutions around the world. "The project aims to give reputable institutions like the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta a platform for sharing their stories and for promoting themselves as champions of educational excellence."
"The 2013 selection by the Cambridge University Students Union (CUSU) of the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry in its annual 'Strategies for Success' publication reflects the CUSU undergraduate and graduate student bodies' belief in our medical school as an exemplar career destination," said D. Douglas Miller, dean of the FoMD. "Ours is the only medical school recognized by the students of one of the world's oldest and greatest institutions of higher learning - Cambridge University. To be listed among nearly 100 other leading global companies and universities as a CUSU-preferred career destination, on the basis of our "creative and memorable approach to learning" medicine, is high praise indeed. This recognition reflects the emphasis on education excellence of our Faculty."
