Forming a new Centre or Institute

Interested in Establishing a New Research Centre or Institute in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry?

The use of the term  "centre" and "institute" is limited by approval processes that are in place at the faculty and university level. If you are interested in establishing a new research , centre or institute please submit a brief summary (one page or less) of the objectives of this unit with information on the proposed membership (approximate numbers of faculty members, whether it includes members from other faculties, etc.) and linkage/relationship with other centres or institutes at the University of Alberta (and elsewhere if appropriate). This will initially be reviewed by the Vice Dean, Research.

Centres and Institutes

All groupings of faculty members that wish to be recognized as a "research centre" or "research institute" require approval by the Office of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic). As noted on UAPPOL, " the use of the words "Centre" and "Institute" are reserved by GFC (General Faculties Council), therefore, initiatives shall not sure these words in public documentation prior to receipt of notice of approval." Any centre or institute operating without such approval risk closure by the university. Further information is available at UAPPOL.
