Barriers and Challenges to Clinical Studies Relating to Pregnant Women in
Sub-Saharan Africa

This presentation will focus on the challenges of conducting clinical studies in pregnant women in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Clinical studies are especially needed to address the high burden of diseases such as malaria in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC). Very few clinical studies however, are conducted in SSA countries and pregnant women are often left behind in research progress while they are at higher risk for complications and mortality. What could be the barriers and challenges for conducting clinical studies in pregnant women in SSA settings and potential solutions to consider? This presentation will present some challenges and opportunities based on the RECIPAL preconception cohort study conducted in Benin, West Africa.
Dr. Manfred Accrombessi is a medical epidemiologist with more than 10 years of experience in clinical trials and epidemiological studies related to malaria, neglected tropical diseases, and emerging diseases (Lassa Fever, Ebola, COVID-19) in Sub-Saharan Africa. He is currently a research fellow in medical epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).
