Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: Burden and Opportunities in Low Resource Settings

Children with mental disorders are more likely to have psychosocial dysfunctions and are frequent users of healthcare and community resources compared to the general population. Unfortunately, their needs are often not met due to their complexities and shortage of skilled manpower especially in low resource settings. Despite the limited resources, there are opportunities for collaborative care, innovation and research.  

Dr. Godfrey Zari Rukundo is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Psychiatry at Mbarara University of Science and Technology University in Uganda. He has been a member of faculty at MUST since 2001. His research focus is on depression, suicide, child and adolescent mental health, and mental disorders secondary to general medical conditions. He has successfully supervised several research projects of PhD, Masters and undergraduate students at MUST and other institutions. Dr. Rukundo is a clinician with over 20 years of experience in different settings.
