Events with Physical Activity
Student groups organize a variety of events that involve physical activity, ranging from fitness classes to ski and snowboard trips. Physical activity is a great way to have fun and build community among students, however, it comes with an increased risk of physical injury and therefore these activities are considered to be high risk.
Groups that host events with physical activity are required to have the following:
- Primary and Secondary Event Organizers.
- Risk Assessment Plan and Emergency Action Plan. These planning templates are required for high-risk events as they help groups identify and assess risks as well as plan mitigation and emergency response measures. These can be found in the event form or by emailing the Student Affairs Team.
- First aid kit and an individual trained in first aid on site.
- Incident Report Form on site.
- Comprehensive General Liability insurance (either annual or event insurance). Please check out Risk Management & Insurance - Student Groups and read on the requirements your group must meet when procuring insurance.
- Waivers and/or Informed Consent Forms signed by all participants. These will be created by the Student Affairs Team to be administered by the student group.
Examples of Physical Activity, including but not limited to:
- Yoga
- Events held at recreational facilities (i.e. trampoline parks, fitness facilities, laser tag, etc.)
- Running
- Hiking or camping
- "Amazing Race" style events
- Dodgeball
- Soccer, basketball, volleyball, cricket, football, badminton, etc.
- Skating, curling, hockey
- Dance
Ski & Snowboard Trips
Ski and snowboard trips usually involve at least three high-risk categories: travel, physical activity, and alcohol. Due to the risks associated with these trips, student groups are encouraged to book their trip with a touring company. Touring companies have appropriate insurance in place to cover ski and snowboard activities, travel, and alcohol. Touring companies organize details, including hotels/accommodations, travel and lift tickets. Please submit ski and snowboard trips on BearsDen as early as possible due to the risk management measures required for travel, physical activity, and alcohol.
More information on events with physical activity can be found in Event Organizer Training.
