For Host Supervisors
This research scholarship program provides opportunities for a select few visiting international students from UTEC (University of Engineering and Technology in Lima, Peru) to perform research under your supervision and mentorship while at the University of Alberta. This research should have strategic value for the partnership between University of Alberta and UTEC.
Host Supervisor Responsibilities
University of Alberta faculty members are kindly requested to provide a letter confirming willingness to host the candidate that references the research project as well as details on the expected outcome and/or prospective cooperation in the future. A template may be provided upon request.
Once the participant has arrived on campus, host supervisors are asked to provide access to appropriate research facilities and to act as a mentor for the duration of the participant’s stay.
Responsibilities of University of Alberta's International Student & Visitor Services (ISVS)
ISVS is responsible for overseeing this program. We look forward to directly facilitating the formal invitation letter and immigration application process for the visiting researcher and their U of A host professor. ISVS staff will submit the Foreign Visitor Category Assessment for any research interns as necessary.
After selection for the scholarship, candidates will be formally invited to the University of Alberta. These visiting international students must obtain the proper immigration documents to perform research, or work (not study), in Canada. The exact immigration category for invitation is dependent on a few factors, the primary one being the length of stay as a researcher.
Stays of less than 120 calendar days:
- Global Skills Strategy Short-term (120 Day) Work Permit Exemption for Researchers and must obtain a visitor visa and/or eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization)
Stays of more than 120 calendar days:
- Research Award Recipients must obtain a work permit along with potential visitor visa and/or eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization)
The appropriate category for a visiting research individual's invitation will be determined and confirmed with all parties after nomination/application on an ad-hoc basis, as it can depend on individual factors as well such as which passport the visiting researcher will be travelling under, where they are applying from or arriving from, etc.
Candidate's research may commence at times of year acceptable to the scholarship program, depending on the availability of both parties during that period, funding, etc.
University of Alberta faculty are welcome to contact the International Internship Coordinator (Inbound) at intern@ualberta.ca with any questions or for more information.
