Organizations

College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA)

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) regulates the practice of medicine in Alberta.

The University of Alberta requires all postgraduate medical trainees to be licensed with the CPSA. To be eligible for the CPSA's Educational Register in this province, graduates from non-Canadian medical schools must meet their requirements, including the English Language Proficiency requirements.

CPSA licensing fees are the responsibility of the trainee; the University of Alberta will not reimburse this cost.

Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)

The Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) was established to protect physicians' practice and professional integrity. CMPA provides residents with the liability insurance necessary to protect them from patients seeking legal action.

The University of Alberta requires all postgraduate medical trainees to have a CMPA membership before they can partake in their training.

CMPA fees are the responsibility of the trainee; the University will not reimburse this cost.

Professional Association of Resident Physicians of Alberta (PARA)

The Professional Association of Resident Physicians of Alberta (PARA) endeavours to provide effective representation for physicians completing further training in a residency program. PARA advocates excellence in education and patient care while striving to achieve optimal working conditions and personal well-being for all its members.

PARA negotiates the Resident Physician Agreement with Alberta Health Services, the University of Alberta, and the University of Calgary. New members will receive a copy of the Agreement in their PARA orientation package.

If you are interested in serving as a committee representative, require more information, or wish to join the organization, please contact para@para-ab.ca.

Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC)

The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) is the academic partnership of Canada’s faculties of medicine. Through their collective leadership and advocacy, they aim to achieve excellence in education, research and care for the health of all Canadians.

The University of Alberta is one of 17 faculties of medicine in Canada.

Canadian Post-MD Education Registry (CAPER)

The Canadian Post-MD Education Registry (CAPER) is a national database that provides accurate, timely information regarding post-MD training in Canada. It was established in 1986 through the co-operation of national medical organizations with an interest in the post-M.D. clinical education of physicians in Canada.

CAPER is incorporated within the by-laws of The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) with the mandate to provide accurate information which may be used for medical manpower planning on a national basis. To accomplish this task, an individual longitudinal file is maintained containing socio-demographic information and details of the current and past training programs of each resident or fellow under the supervision of the Canadian faculties of medicine on November 1st of each year.

Each Canadian Faculty of Medicine is required to provide CAPER with information concerning trainees in post-MD programs each year. All postgraduate medical trainees are required to complete a Disclosure of Personal Information Consent Form, which authorizes the Faculty to release information to CAPER. CAPER maintains trainee confidentiality.
