Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
To support protocol authors and ACUC members, the CCAC emphasizes the importance of formal, written Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for commonly used animal procedures. SOPs ensure consistent, verifiable practices and provide an efficient alternative to detailing procedures within protocols.
Use the approved SOP Template found in the Forms Cabinet.
Institutional SOPs (iSOPs)
- Approved by University Animal Policy Welfare Committee.
- Accessible through the ARISE system within the Animal Module.
- The ACUCs and animal service units offer guidance to help researchers utilize SOPs effectively.
A list of iSOPs is available under the SOP tab in ARISE.
Facility-Specific SOPs
- Maintained by animal service units for procedures performed by their staff.
- These SOPs must be requested from the appropriate unit and attached to the online animal use application.
PI-Specific SOPs
- Principal Investigators (PIs) can develop custom SOPs for their research teams.
- Templates are available in the Forms Cabinet for easy creation and implementation.
Additional Support for Researchers
In addition to SOP guidance, the team of veterinary staff assist researchers working with controlled substances by facilitating Health Canada exemption applications. Please contact your Animal Service Unit Veterinarian for more information regarding Health Canada Applications or contact REO reoffice@ualberta.ca.
