GSA Statement RE Hunka Endowment

The GSA wishes to express its gratitude to the university for its decision to discontinue the endowment honoring Mr. Yaroslav Hunka, as stated recently. Mr. Hunka served as a soldier in the 14th Division 'Galician' of the Waffen-SS under the Nazi regime. Recognizing that endowments play a significant role in shaping public perceptions, it is essential to exercise great caution when accepting donations from various sources and individuals to safeguard the university's reputation.
Furthermore, we strongly believe in fostering a university environment that is safe and devoid of elements that may resurrect deep-seated wounds and generational traumas. We encourage the university to review all named endowments and, moving forward, endorse only those that align with the University's core values and do not cause harm to any members of our community.
